The Chinese seal creative person Baishi was born in Xiangtan, state on Gregorian calendar in 1864. He became a carpenter at the age of fourteen, and learned to color on his own. His seal carving is extremely individualistic, reflective his earlier trade expertise with axe and chisel. Baishi is best proverbial within the western world for his painting and penmanship, although he thought of his seal carving his best work. He was electoral President of the Association of Chinese Artists in 1953.
Qi Baishi wrote in his journal, “Vulgar folks typically describe their seal engraving as one thing derived from Qin and dynasty seals. In fact, they need not learned something. In my very own seals, i'm typically petrified of wanting like Qin and dynasty … in my seal cutting, once young I created a careful study of the penmanship of the people, then searched for the inner logic of engraving characters. I didn't spoil my work by ‘imitation,’ ‘artificial elaboration,’ or ‘over-polishing,’ considering these a waste of energy. once men praised my seals, I smiled; once they ran them down, I smiled … once I cut seals, i'm not certain by previous rules so trendy philistines assume I follow no tradition.
However I pity this generation’s stupidity, for ar doing} not appear to comprehend that the Qin and dynasty artists we tend tore human so are we, and that we could have our distinctive qualities too that the lads of previous would admire too if they may see them? … such classical artists as Ching-teng, Hsueh-ko and Ta-ti-tzu dared to form daring strokes in their paintings, that i like them hugely. My one regret is that i used to be not born 300 years past, for then I may have asked to grind ink or hold the paper for those gentleman, and if they might not have American state I ought to have starved outside their doors instead of move away. However extraordinary that might} have been! I suppose future generations will admire our gift artists even as very much like we tend to admire these men of previous.
